Expanding in a Closed Loop
Christina Norberg
“Exploring the nature of consciousness in a closed-loop practice.”
Artist Statement
I’m interested in the way in which consciousness and its potential for expansion lives within a biosphere with finite resources and complex systems of sustainability and regeneration. My work can be described as macro in scope: drawing from physics, psychology, ecology, and mythology. My practice involves searching for clues that might fill in the gaps in our understanding of what we call reality. Cellular patterns and fractal-like shapes, the building blocks of the universe, merge in self-contained environments approaching dioramas; little worlds that feel fragile and precious, yet powerful. My work asks questions around our relationship with ourselves, as well as the other-than-human beings with whom we share this planet.
Just as the earth is a closed loop of resources with its lifeforms being recycled and reborn, my practice aims to maintain as small of a carbon footprint as possible. Working in photography, painting, and clay, I combine many layers before photographing each composition, and then recycling the materials into new works. The final photographs are printed on watercolour paper for exhibition or by commission only.
