In the Wandering, New Light

This exhibition combines 2020 and 2021 painted works. Reflecting on the year of 2020, a time of personal and collective ambiguity, confusion and grief, I explored these phenomenological experiences in a mindful way, painting my way through the season. This work became known to me as In the Wandering.

New Light represents the paradigm shift that occurred as I began to focus on forms that were near to me; often plants in my home. Using the variety of textures in the plant leaves and woven baskets as a way to ground myself in the present, I painted my way into a new perception of the present.

Marcie Rohr Esau

Through a meditative process, Marcie explores relationships between past, present, and future tenses in her painted works. Her inspiration is derived from various bodies of knowledge, including biology, astrophysics, anthropology and theology. Through scholarly and experiential research, she grounds herself in the present. Rather than “looking forward” into the future, implying a misguided linear construct of reality as largely perceived today, her work facilitates perception of space and time that is all encompassing, reflecting the present as a window into past and future tenses which simultaneously exist. In this context, knowledge is shrouded in mystery. Her painted figures and objects achieve a multidimensionality, suggesting the possibility of a complex reality in which many outcomes occur simultaneously. Marcie has been represented in various festivals and Galleries in her hometown of Edmonton, including the Works Festival, Kaleido Fest, Portal Gallery, Harvest Moon Festival and Harcourt House. She lives and works in Metro Vancouver with her husband and two kids.
